You Crossed My Mind. I Wanted You to Know.
An invitation for Thinking of You Week
Someone crosses your mind while you’re going about your day. A song brings back a memory of an old friend. You make a recipe someone shared with you years ago. You pass a place where you used to meet for lunch, and for a moment, you wonder how they’re doing.
It happens so naturally. People become part of our lives, and little reminders of them stay with us, even when our everyday lives no longer overlap.
But how often do we tell them?
I think many of us carry more affection for people than we ever put into words. We remember their kindness. We appreciate something they taught us. We smile at a memory, think about reaching out, and then get pulled into whatever happens next. The thought was sincere, but the person we were thinking about never knew they were thought of…
Thinking of You Week, September 21–27, is a lovely invitation to do something with those moments. To pick up a pen and give someone a small glimpse of the place they still hold in our lives. That is also the heart of our September theme at The Kindness Krewe: Don’t Just Think It. Say It.
Sometimes we hesitate because it has been a while. We feel as though we need to explain the silence or catch someone up on everything before we can reach out. A simple note can feel like an unexpectedly big task when we attach all those expectations to it. I let go of expectations a long time ago…instead begin right where you are.
“I made your banana bread this weekend and thought about all those mornings we spent talking in your kitchen. I hope you’re doing well.”
Or perhaps:
“It’s been a while, but you crossed my mind today, and I wanted you to know you’re remembered with a smile.”
A few honest sentences give someone something they couldn’t have known otherwise: that in the middle of an ordinary day, they mattered enough for you to pause and reach out.
That is one of the things I love about handwritten notes. We can hold them, set them beside our favorite chair, or tuck them away to read again. They carry a little piece of someone’s attention into our day.
This week, think about someone you’ve remembered recently. Maybe it’s a friend you miss, a neighbor who moved away, or someone whose encouragement has stayed with you longer than they realize. Let that person be the beginning.
Choose a card. Write what brought them to mind. Put it in the mail.
At The Kindness Krewe, we’re practicing this kind of attention together…making room in our everyday lives to remember our people and tell them they matter. Thinking of You Week gives us a place to begin, and it’s a habit we can carry into every week that follows.
Who crossed your mind while you were reading this? Perhaps your next note is for them.
